The Guru Bayase Akhada school of wrestling teaches traditional Indian mud wrestling to fighters training in the style of ‘Pehlwani’ or ‘Kushti’ as it is usually referred to by the local people of Varanasi.
The sport it self originates from an ancient form of South Asian wrestling called ‘malla-yuddha’ which has since been adapted over the millennia into its modern form.

Upon his arrival to the school the wrestlers show respect for their teacher, Manohar Yadhu, by bowing down and touching his feet. I was told that he used to be a champion wrestler with the national team of India.

Historical evidence date the wrestling style back to at least the 5th millennium BC, making it one of the oldest combat sport stilll practiced in the world.
The fighters rub mud on their skin before wrestling because it acts as lubrication so they are harder to hold onto
