Every day, 250 bodies get burned at the Manikarnika Ghat, just please take a moment and think about that number, it's more than 10 bodies every hour, all hours, all the days. With the same fire burning for Millenia.
And all that fire needs wood, it requires up to 500kg (1,100 pounds) to burn a large body, and every morning fresh wood is harvested upstream and sent down the river Ganges on boats to be piled up in huge piles like this one.
It is estimated that around 50 million trees get consumed every year for cremations alone in India. With 100,000 bodies of various cremation levels getting pushed into the River Ganga. Sometimes only half cremated, because the family couldn't afford enough wood to fully cremate the body.
